Facebooks moves looks like it might be trying the EEE strategy MS used on the web, much to its detriment as any web developer knows. It’s moves like this that make us have to write 3 or more sets of CSS tags "-moz-", "-webkit-”, “-ms-”, etc.

For all we know Facebook is starting to pivot into developing beyond its core competency. It is no secret that FB users are leaving in larger numbers because they are fed up with its constant encroachment. When the golden goose dries up, FB has to be ready to switch to another lucrative business. And devices powered by a FB OS with a “built in” pool of tens of thousands of developers (HHVM) might be a feather in the cap of a Facebook hardware platform. This all kind of makes sense, but it is speculation at this point.

In case you aren’t familiar with the Embrace, Extend and Extinguish strategy, you can read up on it here.

I do not believe Facebook is interested to extinguish PHP. It does not make sense, they need PHP, they do not sell PHP based products to have the ambition to dominate PHP development.

I just think they need to move faster than the PHP Core developers are moving. That seems to be why they went on by themselves.

I think they could move faster with more cooperation with the core developers. I am just not sure it would be fast enough for them.
